What should you wear to your Social Security disability hearing? There are no set rules about this but here are some general guidelines:
- There is no need to dress formally in a business suit or coat and tie. You most likely will not be comfortable in formal business clothes and you will feel more relaxed in less formal clothes. You also don’t want to look like you are on a job interview.
- Clean, “dressy casual” clothes are a good choice. Avoid blue jeans, t-shirts, shorts and other informal clothing. For men, a pair of khakis or chinos pants and a button down shirt are a good option. For ladies, pants or a skirt and a button down blouse work well.
- If all you have are blue jeans, that’s fine – many claimants do appear in casual wear. Remember that you are appearing in a courtroom so you want to show respect to the judge and to the hearing process.
If you are not sure about what to wear, ask your lawyer – he or she can offer advice specific to your situation.
